Nigeria’s Super Eagles have won the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco following a 4-2 win over Egypt in the third-place match on Saturday.

It is a record-extending nine bronze medals for Nigeria in the tournament’s history.

Head coach Eric Chelle heavily rotated his starting lineup, with Ademola Lookman and Alex Iwobi starting from the bench while Victor Osimhen was an unused substitute in the game.

The Galatasaray forward had suffered an ankle problem in the semifinal match against Morocco on Wednesday.

Nigeria started the game on the back foot but managed to contain early threats from the Egyptian.

The Super Eagles found the back of the net in the 36th minute through Paul Onuachu, but the goal was chalked off by VAR over a foul by the forward in the buildup.

With the introduction of Iwobi and Lookman in the second half, Nigeria regained possession. The West African nation scored again in the opening minutes of the second half as Lookman headed home a parried ball by the goalkeeper, but it was ruled out for offside.

Both sides foiled each other’s attack for the remainder of the game, sending the game into a penalty shootout, with Nigeria emerging victorious after Stanley Nwabali’s heroics of saving two penalties.
