Gov. Yusuf, 21 Kano assembly members, all LG chairmen dump NNPP

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has formally resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing a deepening internal crisis and the need to safeguard the broader interests of the state’s people.
The governor announced his decision in a letter to the NNPP chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area, effective Friday, January 23, 2026.
This is contained in a statement by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, in Kano on Friday.
The governor expressed gratitude to the party for the platform and support extended to him since 2022.
Mr Yusuf cited persistent internal disputes and legal challenges as reasons for his resignation, stating that the internal disagreements had widened divisions and weakened cohesion within the party.
He emphasised that his decision was guided by public-interest considerations and taken in good faith, without bitterness.
The governor resigned along with 21 members of the State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen of Kano State.
