Israel says no more hostages in Gaza after recovery of police officer’s body
The Israel Defense Forces on Monday said there are no hostages left in Gaza after recovering the corpse of Ran Gvili, an Israeli police officer whose body was held hostage in Gaza.
“There are officially no more hostages in captivity in Gaza,” the Israel Defense Forces announced in a terse statement circulated on social media on Monday.
In a separate statement, the IDF announced that “the deceased hostage SFC Ran Gvili has been identified and will be returned for burial.”
“According to the information and intelligence available to us, SFC Ran Gvili, 24, who served in the Israeli Police Special Forces, fell in combat on the morning of October 7, 2023, and his body was abducted to Gaza,” the IDF said.
“The IDF expresses deep condolences to the family. The IDF will continue to support the families and the returnees and to act to strengthen the security of the citizens of Israel.”
The IDF statement brings closure to issues bordering on both living and dead held hostage in Gaza by Hamas after the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel that left about 1,200 dead and 251 people abducted.
In October 2025, the IDF confirmed the release of 13 hostages, the last set of living hostages in Hamas’ captivity.
Since the October 7 attack, Israeli soldiers have gone after Hamas in Gaza, killing about four of its leaders and over 67,000 people, including children and women.
