About 37 commercial drivers in Cross River State on Thursday received free fuel and tyres by the Unified Commercial Drivers Association in the state.

The  association made the donations during its first meeting of the year in Calabar.

The state chairman of the association, Etta Henshaw, said the meeting brought together drivers and affiliated transport agencies across the state.

Mr Henshaw said that the gathering was aimed at outlining the drivers’ agenda for the year and strengthening welfare support for members.

The fuel, which were in 10-litre gallons and the brand new tyres were provided by the association chairman in collaboration with the Cross Rivers State Government.

The chairman said that 30 drivers received a 10-litre gallon of fuel each, while seven drivers got brand new tyres.

He explained that the initiative was designed to ensure that drivers benefit directly from ticket revenues through welfare programmes and incentives.

According to him, the free distribution of fuel and tyres was introduced under his leadership to motivate drivers and ease their operational challenges.

He said, “Today’s event marks the second time such support is provided since I assumed office as state chairman.”

Speaking further, he acknowledged disagreements during the meeting, noting that enforcement of traffic laws remained a major concern among drivers.

The chairman said drivers often demanded a complete removal of enforcement, which he described as unrealistic in a law-governed society.

He added that the state government reduced fines and removed some offences to address drivers’ complaints.

Mr Henshaw explained that the association was working closely with enforcement agencies to ensure understanding and cooperation on the roads.

The chairman maintained that there was synergy between agency heads and enforcement officers, contrary to drivers’ fears.

He noted that continuous dialogue would help improve relations between drivers and regulatory authorities in the state.

Similarly,  Chairman of the Commercial Transport Regulatory Agency (CTRA), Efa Nyong  commended the drivers for their attendance, noting that vehicle registration and renewal would be free for men and women above 60.

Mr Nyong said that the agency limited the traffic offences in the state to non-usage seatbelts, overloading and when a vehicle had not been registered with CTRA.

He said others include not having a spare tyre, side mirrors and a fire extinguisher, adding that enforcement for these items would begin on March 1.

Other organisations that attended the meeting include the representatives of the Nigeria Police Force, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and the Vehicle Inspection Officers, among others.
