Habu Gumel, president of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), has reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to developing emerging sports in the country.

Gumel gave the assurance on Saturday during Nigeria’s first-ever demonstration of Sepaktakraw at the Indoor Hall, Package B, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

Gumel spoke through the deputy secretary-general of the NOC, Abdullahi Mohammed.

He said the demonstration was organised to showcase Sepaktakraw and highlight its potential for growth in Nigeria, particularly at the grassroots level.

Gumel noted that all participating athletes were under 20, describing early exposure as critical to nurturing future champions.

According to him, emerging sports require deliberate investment in youth development, technical training and effective administrative structures to thrive.

The NOC president commended the organisers, the National Sports Commission (NSC), members of the Sepaktakraw board, technical officials and the media for their roles in promoting the sport.

He said that adequate media coverage would help accelerate nationwide awareness and acceptance of Sepaktakraw.

“Sepaktakraw already enjoys global recognition, with more than 60 countries participating worldwide, making its adoption and domestication in Nigeria easier.

“The sport has the potential to create employment opportunities, positively engage youths and reduce youth restiveness if properly developed,” he said.

Gumel assured stakeholders of the NOC’s support for the sport through technical assistance, capacity building and access to Olympic Solidarity funds.

He expressed optimism about the future of Sepaktakraw in Nigeria, noting that the athletes displayed impressive skills during the demonstration.

“With the right support, these young athletes can compete at continental and international levels and bring honour to the country,” he said.

Sepaktakraw is a Southeast Asian sport that combines elements of volleyball and football, played with a rattan ball over a net, using only the feet, knees, chest and head.
