South Africa’s minister for sports, art and culture, Gayton McKenzie, has faulted an announcement made by his deputy, Peace Mabel, indicating that the country would replace Morocco as the host of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

He stated Morocco remains the host of the tournament.

Ms Mabel, who is the deputy minister of sports, art and culture, at an award ceremony on Sunday, announced that South Africa had stepped up to replace Morocco as the host nation for the tournament, claiming the North African country withdrew from staging the WAFCON.

However, in a statement by Mr McKenzie, the senior minister said that South Africa only indicated readiness to take over the WAFCON from Morocco should the Moroccan authorities decide that they are no longer able to host the competition.

The statement said, “The Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture has clarified comments made by the Deputy Minister regarding the hosting of the 2026 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

“South Africa has only indicated its willingness to support CAF if alternative hosting arrangements become necessary. These discussions are part of CAF’s routine contingency planning.”

Mr McKenzie stressed that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has not made any decision to move WAFCON from Morocco, noting that the North African country remained the host nation.

He added, “No decision has been taken to move the tournament, and Morocco remains the confirmed host. CAF has not activated any alternative hosting process. Any potential hosting by South Africa would depend on formal CAF confirmation, Cabinet approval, venue and infrastructure readiness, and the completion of all required government guarantees in partnership with SAFA and other stakeholders.

“The Deputy Minister’s remarks do not confirm South Africa as host, but reflect the country’s ongoing support for African football and its proven capacity to host major international events. Further announcements will be made only after all formal processes are concluded.”
