Bulus Maiyaki, former commissioner for works and finance in Taraba, has condemned the recent attacks and burning of churches in communities of the Donga and Takum Local Government Areas of Taraba.

Mr Maiyaki, who spoke to journalists on Monday in Jalingo, the state capital, insisted that the killings must stop.

He expressed concern about the recent, incessant attacks on communities in the two local government areas, calling on all stakeholders to come together and end the menace.

Maiyaki appealed to Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba and the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Muslim Council in the state to wade into the crisis with a view to finding a lasting solution.

He also stressed the need to include traditional rulers and other critical stakeholders in peacebuilding efforts to prevent recurrences of such acts in the area.

Mr Maiyaki, who served during the former Governor Jolly Nyame administration, advised the attackers to stop the killings and present their grievances to the appropriate authorities for redress.

“I am worried over the continuous attacks, maiming, killings and destruction of property by a group of people who have not come out to tell the public what has been their grouse against the Tiv communities in Donga and Takum.

“These killings must stop, and I am advising the perpetrators to sheathe their swords and present their grievances to the authorities for redress.

“I am calling on Governor Kefas and our traditional rulers, as well as CAN and the Muslim Council in the state, to intervene in this matter with a view to finding a lasting solution,” Mr Maiyaki pleaded.

Suspected herdsmen killed people, displaced others and destroyed churches on Sunday in the Donga and Takum local government areas of Taraba.
