Ryan Routh, the man who attempted to assassinate President Donald Trump in the run up to the U.S. election in 2024, has been sentenced to life in prison.

Mr Routh, 59, a native of North Carolina who lived in Hawaii, was arrested at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach in September, 2024, while he lurked around with a rifle.

Sentencing Mr Routh on Wednesday, Judge Aileen Cannon, said his crimes “undeniably warrant a life sentence,” adding he had not shown regret or remorse for his action.

“Mr Routh took steps over the course of months to assassinate a major presidential candidate, demonstrated the will to kill anybody in the way, and has since expressed neither regret nor remorse to his victims,” Ms Cannon wrote in the judgment.

Mr Routh’s attempt on Mr Trump’s life was the second during the 2024 election campaign, after 20-year-old Thomas Crook, who opened fire while Mr Trump spoke at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July.

Martin Ross, Mr Routh’s lawyer, said the judgment would be appealed.
