The police command in Oyo state, on Wednesday, said it arrested a rape suspect in Iganna in Iwajowa LGA.

In a statement by the command’s spokesman, Ayanlade Olayinka, the police said the case was reported by the victim’s father.

“The Oyo state police command has arrested one Ogunwande Sodiq (M), aged 24 years, in connection with an alleged case of rape and threat to life reported in the Iganna area of the state.

“The case was brought to the attention of the police by the father of the survivor, who reported that the suspect unlawfully broke into and gained entry into the room of his daughter, an 18-year-old female, where he allegedly threatened her with a knife and forcefully raped her,” the statement said.

The police spokesman said the victim was taken to a hospital for medical evaluation and socio-psychological support, following the formal report of the case.

“The prompt medical attention ensured her safety and well-being while the police initiated immediate action to apprehend the suspect,” Mr Olayinka said.

The alleged rapist had been arrested.

Mr Olayinka stated, “He has confessed to the crime and is cooperating with the police, facilitating the ongoing investigation.”

He added that detectives from Iganna Police Division visited the crime scene, took photographs and recovered exhibits, including a knife and a bedsheet as evidence.

Police commissioner Femi Haruna directed that the matter be transferred to the command’s Gender Desk in Ibadan to ensure a discreet and exhaustive investigation.

Mr Haruna condemned sexual violence and threats to life, particularly against women.
