The family of a woman killed by a BRT driver along Ikorodu Road says it has rejected the N1.5 million compensation offered to them by the Lagos government.

The woman, Olabisi Ogunfuye, was crushed to death on July 8, 2025.

“The company, they are not responsive at all, neither are they responsible, offering us a meagre, that if I just rub my hair like this, I will bring the money out, that’s what they are giving me. That money they are offering, is that enough to train a child in primary school, not to talk of secondary, university and masters?

“The children need to be taken care of. A mother that had her education up till masters level, don’t you think if she was alive, she will want her children too, to do even PhD? I want to believe that is what they’ve been offering people they’ve been killing on daily basis in Lagos. The sweepers, passers by that their BRT busses kill, that’s what they’ve been offering them. It’s not going to be the same for this case.

“They said they were going to give us N1.5 million, on that day at the police station, that was when quarel erupted before their Oga called them, and said said let us give you N4 million. Even the master’s degree my daughter did at LASU, N4 million was not enough to do it. I don’t know their mental ability that made them think they should give us that kind of money. I want justice, I want justice to prevail on this very matter,” said Omodara Oluremi, the mother of the deceased, on Thursday.

The victim’s husband, Bolanle Ogunfuye, stated that he was waiting for his wife who was on her way home, from her place of work she start just four months before the accident, for them to take one of their sick children to the hospital, when her number became unreachable, adding that they were also preparing for their children’s birthday that same month.

The family’s counsel, Festus Ogun, said, “We have rejected the paltry sum of N1.5 million initially proposed as a settlement. We find that very demeaning and insulting. They filed an application in court to release the BRT bus that caused the death of Mrs Ogunfuye.

“They are not talking about how the family’s grievances will be properly addressed, they are not talking about reasonable compensation but they are more concerned about releasing the vehicle. It took our intervention in opposing to that application in court before they had to withdraw it. For them to have the effrontery to apply to court for that vehicle to be released, it means they have taken us for granted for too long.”

LAMATA and the Lagos government could be immediately reached for comments on the matter.
