Scores killed, others kidnapped as bandits invade Niger community
Tugan-Makeri, Konsoko, and Pissa communities in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State were thrown into mourning on Saturday as armed bandits killed scores of residents, kidnapped several others and destroyed properties.
Reports indicated that the first dastardly attack took place at Tunga-Makeri in Konkoso Ward around 3:00 a.m., where no fewer than six people were slaughtered.
Residents said the attackers proceeded to Konsoko and Pissa at about 6:00 a.m, where they started shooting sporadically, reportedly killing several people while setting several buildings ablaze.
Residents, who spoke to Peoples Gazette on Saturday, said the bandits came in huge numbers, throwing the affected communities into total disarray.
“The armed attackers were about 200. They stormed these communities and started shooting. Although the attacks happened in several others, many people were killed and unidentified number kidnapped,” a resident stated.
“The affected communities are located about 200 kilometres from the Nigerian Air Force Base in New Bussa, the headquarters of Borgu LGA”
Niger police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the attack on Tugan-Makeri village occurred around 3:00 a.m. on Saturday.
Mr Abiodun confirmed that six people were killed in the community, some houses were set ablaze, and an unspecified number of people were kidnapped.
He further stated that the armed bandits later moved to Konsoko, noting that details of the attack there were, however, sketchy.
“On 14/2/2026 at about 6:00 a.m., a report was received indicating that at about 3:00 a.m., suspected bandits invaded Tunga-Makeri village via Shafachi District in Borgu LGA.
“During the attack, six persons lost their lives, some houses were set ablaze, and a yet-to-be-ascertained number of persons were abducted. The terrorists were also reported to have moved to Konkoso village, while other details remain sketchy,” Mr Abiodun stated.
Meanwhile, the police said joint security teams had been mobilised to the scene for assessment, adding efforts to rescue the victims were ongoing.
The latest attack came days after Boko Haram terrorists invaded neighbouring Kwara communities, killing over 200 residents while kidnapping several others.
