A former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Idi Hong, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa.

Mr Hong, who also served as Minister of State for Health, announced his defection on Saturday in his hometown, Hong, before supporters and political associates.

According to him, the decision follows extensive consultations with members of his political structure and loyalists across the state.

Mr Hong explained that his remaining in PDP was no longer in the best interest of his supporters and their collective political aspirations.

“I cannot allow myself and my followers to be dragged down by a party that is clearly losing direction.

“The move is guided by a desire to advance development in the state and the country,” he said.

Mr Hong expressed confidence that the APC provided a more viable platform to achieve his goals, adding that he would contribute his experience and ideas to strengthen the party.

He directed members of his political network to resign from the PDP and fully align with the APC, assuring them of his readiness to work for the party’s victory in the 2027 general elections.

Welcoming him, Idris Shuaibu, chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), represented by Hassan Babuto, assured Hong of equal rights and opportunities in the APC.

“In APC, we do not discriminate. By virtue of your registration, you are qualified to contest any position you wish,” Mr Babuto said.

Also speaking, Aliyu Ahmed, APC chairman in Hong Local Government Area, pledged the party’s support for Mr Hong in any capacity he chooses to serve.

Mr Ahmed described APC as a peaceful and progressive platform committed to inclusive participation, adding that Hong had registered in Shangui Ward of Hong LGA.
