The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has announced Wednesday as the first day of Ramadan in 2026.

The announcement was contained in a statement by Sambo Wali Junaidu, the chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Sokoto, on Tuesday.

Mr Junaidu said the announcement followed reports from various monitoring committees across the country confirming the sighting of the new moon.

“His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar CFR, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General, Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), has accepted the reports and accordingly declared Wednesday, 18th February, 2026, as the first day of Ramadan 1447AH,” the statement read.

While felicitating the Nigerian Muslim Ummah, the Sultan urged them to continue praying for peace, progress, and the development of the country.

The declaration came hours after Saudi Arabia announced the sighting of the crescent moon for the commencement of the holy month of Ramadan 2026.
