Ramadan, season of renewal, responsibility, says cleric

The President of Anwar-Ul Islam Movement of Nigeria, Lateef Lawal, has said Ramadan is a season of spiritual renewal, moral refinement and communal solidarity.
Mr Lawal spoke on Sunday at the movement’s annual Ramadan lecture at Anwar-Ul Islam Model College, Agege, Lagos, attended by scholars, clerics and community leaders.
He said the holy month offers Muslims a rare opportunity to reassess their lives, purify intentions and strengthen bonds within families and communities.
The cleric said, “Ramadan is not merely a season of fasting; it is a period for profound spiritual renewal, moral refinement and communal solidarity. It enjoins us to move beyond rituals into transformation, beyond recitation into reflection, and beyond individual piety into collective responsibility.”
Mr Lawal warned against reducing fasting to abstinence from food and drink, stressing that true observance requires discipline, compassion and integrity in daily conduct.
He urged Muslims to engage the Quran meaningfully, allowing its teachings to influence personal behaviour, social relationships and public responsibilities.
He added, “Our Tafsir this year must be more than an intellectual exercise; it must reform our character, strengthen unity and recommit us to service of humanity.”
He said the lessons of Ramadan should inspire justice, generosity and peaceful coexistence long after the month ends.
Mr Lawal encouraged the faithful to soften their hearts, sharpen their conscience and elevate their character in pursuit of Allah’s mercy.
