UNILAG attracted 120 funded research projects in five years: Official

The University of Lagos says it attracted more than 120 nationally and internationally funded research projects over the past five years.
The deputy vice-chancellor (development services), Foluso Lesi, disclosed this on Wednesday at a workshop on Horizon Europe Africa Initiative IV and Global Health EDCTP3.
Mr Lesi represented the vice-chancellor, Folasade Ogunsola, at the opening session of the hands-on training programme.
In a statement, he reaffirmed the university’s strong research profile, noting that scholars published over 2,000 peer-reviewed papers annually over the past five years.
“Within the same period, UNILAG attracted more than 120 nationally and internationally funded research projects,” he said.
He explained that the projects covered health, climate change, digital transformation, pharmaceutics and inclusive education. According to him, in 2024 alone, the university facilitated more than 30 successful student mobility and staff exchange programmes.
“This milestone reinforces our standing as a leading research-intensive university in West Africa,” Mr Lesi said.
He added that UNILAG had significantly advanced its clinical research capacity, contributing to infectious disease control, maternal and antenatal care, and public health resilience.
Reiterating commitment to the Horizon Europe programme, he described the workshop as a strategic platform for knowledge exchange and sustainable partnerships.
The director at the Research Management Office, Solomon Okunuga, described the workshop as an eye-opening train-the-trainer initiative.
“It is designed to strengthen proposal development skills and enhance competitiveness for grants under Horizon Europe Africa Initiative IV and other funding streams,” Mr Okunuga said.
