At least 40 officials of the Iranian government were killed on Saturday as the U.S. and Israel launched an attack on the Islamic Republic.

Citing an intelligence and a military source, the BBC on Sunday reported that “around 40 Iranian officials were killed in the strikes.”

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was listed among the top government officials killed in the attack.

While a list of the 40 officials killed during the strikes has not been released, the Israel Defense Forces on Saturday announced that seven top officials of Mr Khamenei’s regime were killed in the attack.

At least 148 people were reportedly killed after a strike hit a school in Southern Iran on Saturday.

In retaliatory attacks, Iran has fired several missiles at Gulf countries hosting U.S. bases.
