Belfast’s QFT named ’one of greatest cinemas worldwide’

Queen’s Film Theatre (QFT) in Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland in the United Kingdom, has been recognised as one of the best cinemas in the world, ranking number 22 on Time Out’s latest list of “the greatest cinemas in the world right now.”
Time Out’s ranking highlights cinemas with unique experiences, interesting histories, and bold programming, from historic theatres to venues that show films beyond the popular mainstream.
QFT ranked 22 out of 100 cinemas, with Time Out highlighting its reputation as a must-visit spot for those who love cinema.
Often called the “home of independent cinema in Belfast,” QFT is in a Georgian terrace beside Queen’s University in Belfast. The cinema has a spacious and lively interior, with a modest exterior.
QFT opened in 1968, when the founder of the local film festival convinced the university to convert a lecture theatre into a 250-seat cinema.
Over the decades, QFT has also hosted special seasons, festivals, and community events.
Business and operations manager at QFT, Cherith Crozier, told the BBC that the recognition “means the world.”
Ms Crozier said the recognition was a big deal for the QFT team, staff, and also for the community who support the theatre.
She mentioned that the theatre has a very loyal fan base, with some people having been coming to it for the last 60 years.
The uniqueness of the venue, which Ms Crozier said has been likened to a “tardis,” a fictional time machine and spacecraft from the British TV show ‘Doctor Who,’ along with its unique programming, is probably part of the reason why the cinema was ranked so high.
“It’s a little haven and a portal to the rest of the world,” she said.
At the top of Time Out’s list is TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, a Hollywood movie palace known for premieres and its historic auditorium.
Following it is The Stella Cinema Rathmines in Dublin, known for its 1920s experience. In New York, there is also an independent cinema renowned for its special screenings.
