IWD: Nigerian Legion empowers widows, vulnerable women

The Nigerian Legion on Sunday empowered widows of military veterans and other vulnerable women in the society in commemoration of the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration (IWD).
The Chairman of the Legion, Morenike Henry, said the legion had continued to impact the lives of widows and vulnerable women in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.
Ms Henry congratulated Nigerian women and women across the world on the occasion, noting that the legion remained committed to supporting women, particularly widows of fallen and retired servicemen.
According to her, the theme of the 2026 IWD, “Give to Gain,” encourages generosity, collaboration and collective upliftment in advancing the cause of women globally.
Ms Henry said the day also provided an opportunity to recognise the achievements of women and girls in different fields including education, work, politics and culture.
She noted that the mandate of the legion, as provided in the Nigerian Legion Act (as amended), empowered the organisation to establish and regulate a Women Auxiliary Wing to support welfare and rehabilitation programmes for veterans and their families.
“The Nigerian Legion has continued to organise women, including widows of ex-servicemen, to support welfare, rehabilitation and fundraising initiatives for veterans,” she said.
The chairman said the legion had demonstrated its commitment to supporting women through the distribution of empowerment kits and gifts to widows in December 2025.
She assured that the organisation would continue to collaborate with stakeholders to uplift women and promote humanitarian initiatives across the country.
Ms Henry again congratulated Nigerian women and women around the world on the celebration of International Women’s Day.
