NPFL: Pillars edge Barau FC in derby

Kano Pillars Football Club on Sunday defeated fellow Kano side Barau FC 1-0 in a Match Day 29 fixture of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Professional Football League.
The encounter, held at the Sani Abacha Stadium, attracted a large crowd who turned out to support Kano Pillars FC despite the ongoing Ramadan fast.
The home side needed a positive response after their 2-1 away defeat to Shooting Stars FC last weekend, and showed determination from the start.
However, both teams struggled to break the deadlock in the first half, as the encounter was largely dominated by midfield battles and solid defensive displays.
The breakthrough eventually came in the 57th minute when veteran forward Ahmed Musa connected with a well-delivered corner kick from Mustapha Jibrin to fire home the only goal of the match.
Barau FC responded with renewed attacking efforts after going behind, mounting pressure on the Pillars’ defence in search of an equaliser.
In spite of several attempts, the visitors were repeatedly denied by the organised Pillars back line and the goalkeeper, who ensured the home side maintained their slim lead.
Pillars then focused on protecting their advantage in the closing stages of the match, successfully warding off late attacks from Barau FC to secure all three points.
Speaking after the match, Pillars’ head coach, Babagaru Muhammad, commended his players for their performance and resilience.
He described the victory as important for the team following their defeat in the previous fixture.
“The players showed great determination and discipline throughout the match. It was a good performance from the team,” Mr Muhammad said.
He added that the team would continue to improve as they prepare for their next league fixture against Niger Tornadoes FC.
“We will keep working hard to ensure we get a good result in our next game,” he said.
The victory moved Kano Pillars to 35 points, placing the team in 16th position on the league table.
Musa was voted Man of the Match by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria for his decisive goal in the encounter.
