Ex-Super Eagles coach Adegboye Onigbinde dies at 88
Adegboye Onigbinde, a former head coach of the Nigeria national football team, has died.
His family confirmed his passing in a statement signed by Bolade Adesuyi, a member of his family and shared via WhatsApp broadcast late on Monday.
The statement read, “With great gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing of this great man, a Modakeke High Chief, the first indigenous Nigerian Super Eagles football coach, father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, High Chief Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, who passed unto the great beyond a couple of minutes ago.”
He was 88.
The Modakeke high chief had two stints as the head coach of the Super Eagles and guided Nigeria into the final of the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations but the West African country lost 3-1 to Cameroon.
He came back in 2002 when he led Nigeria to the FIFA World Cup co-hosted by South Korea and Japan in the same year, becoming the first indigenous coach to achieve the feat.
The family noted details of his funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
