‘I can’t cope,’ Kunle Afolayan seeks help after N11 million diesel bill

Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has expressed concern over the rising cost of diesel in the country, revealing that one of his businesses spent about ₦11 million on the fuel within five weeks.
Afolayan said the rising price of diesel has become difficult for him to sustain, leaving him worried about the future of the business.
“I’ve been sad because I can’t cope with the N1,500 per litre of diesel,” said the filmmaker. “In one of the businesses that we run, the KAP Village, we spend about N11 million in four or five weeks on diesel. And we have solar power, but we’re still spending about N11 million.”
The filmmaker said the development has been discouraging since the latest increase in diesel prices.
“When this new price of diesel came, I’ve been sad, it’s not sustainable,” he added.
Afolayan also disclosed that the diesel used to power the facility is often bought on credit due to the high cost.
“The diesel we’ve been buying, we’ve been buying on credit. When we make small money, we find a way to pay. Sometimes it even takes two months to even pay down and then get another one on credit. But now from about N1,000 or N995 to N1,500,” he said.
Afolayan sought financial assistance to expand the solar system in the film village.
“We need a loan to upgrade our solar power, so please, if you can come to our aid, I’ll really appreciate,” he said.
Afolayan runs KAP Film Village and Resort, a creative hub and tourism destination established to support filmmaking and cultural development.
His statement comes amid rising fuel costs in Nigeria following Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s revised depot prices. The refinery increased the gantry price of fuel to ₦1,175 per litre, up from ₦995, and diesel to ₦1,620 per litre, up from ₦1,430.
