Victor Osimhen was close to tears after Galatasaray fans displayed a tifo bearing the image of the player, his daughter, and his late mother ahead of the Turkish side’s UEFA Champions League tie against Liverpool on Tuesday.

The Super Eagles forward then went ahead to provide the assist for the only goal in the game as Mario Lemina headed home a header by Osimhen that was going wide of its target to secure a crucial 1-0 win for Galatasaray ahead of the return leg at Anfield Stadium next week.

The first half of the encounter was littered with opportunities for either side to score again, but both failed to capitalise on these chances.

Osimhen thought he had doubled the lead for the hosts in the 62nd minute when he tapped home a loose ball near the post, but the goal was ruled out for an offside in the buildup to the play.

Likewise, Ibrahima Konaté thought he had equalised for Liverpool eight minutes later, but the goal was chalked off by VAR because the ball had ricocheted off his shoulder on its way into the net.

The result meant that Galatasaray have now beaten Liverpool twice in the Champions League this season after the Turkish side defeated the Reds 1-0 during the league phase of the competition.
