Romania approves increased U.S. military presence

Romania has approved expanded use of its military bases by the United States (U.S.), including the deployment of aircraft for in-air refuelling, radar systems, and satellite communication equipment, authorities said Thursday.
The decision was approved by Romania’s Supreme Council of National Defence and parliament.
Nicușor Dan, who chairs the council, emphasised that the equipment involved is solely defensive.
The satellite systems will support the U.S. missile defence shield already stationed at Deveselu since 2016.
According to the U.S., the shield is intended to protect against missile threats from Iran.
Details on the number of additional systems being deployed were not disclosed.
Romania has been a member of NATO since 2004.
Mr Dan, seeking to maintain strong relations with Washington, also attended the first meeting of Donald Trump’s controversial Board of Peace as an observer.
