The permanent secretary of the defence ministry, Richard Pheelangwah, has urged the Defence Intelligence Agency to adopt cutting-edge technologies to enhance the country’s intelligence operations.

In a statement by the ministry on Thursday, Mr Pheelangwah made the call during a familiarisation visit to the agency in Abuja.

Mr Pheelangwah commended the professionalism and dedication of DIA personnel in safeguarding the nation.

Mr Pheelangwah highlighted their crucial role in intelligence gathering, inter-agency collaboration, and efforts to counter terrorism, banditry, and other security threats.

Mr Pheelangwah attributed the successes to the visionary leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR.

He stressed that modern technologies, combined with well-trained and motivated personnel, are vital to staying ahead of evolving security challenges.

Mr Pheelangwah also called for the welfare of staff to remain a top priority to boost operational effectiveness.

In response, the chief of defence intelligence Emmanuel Undiandeye described the visit as an opportunity to showcase the agency’s proactive role in preventing and neutralising threats, including terrorism, cybercrime, and kidnappings.

Mr Undiandeye noted that strategic deployment of human, technical, and liaison resources ensures DIA remains ahead of adversaries.

He highlighted key achievements over the past two years, including minimal unintended targeting, reduced civilian casualties, and the training of more than 1,300 personnel in intelligence and related skills.

Mr Pheelangwah also appealed for additional resources to support staff welfare, ensure timely operational funding, and acquire new operational platforms.
