Suspected terrorists bomb bridge linking communities in Niger

Suspected terrorists destroyed a bridge linking communities in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State with an improvised explosive device (IED) in the early hours of Monday, police authorities say.
The state police spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, said in a statement that the incident occurred at about 2:00 a.m.
“On 23rd March 2026, at about 6:30 a.m., a report was received indicating that at about 2:00 a.m. of the same date, suspected terrorists within the park forest used explosive devices to bomb a bridge located along Luma Road in Borgu LGA, connecting Luma–Babanna–Agwara communities,” Mr Abiodun said.
He explained that the destruction of the bridge was an attempt by the terrorists to undermine ongoing security operations in the area.
“It was discovered that the bridge was damaged by the hoodlums during security operations in the area,” Mr Abiodun added.
He noted that security agencies have intensified clearance operations at the affected area, stressing that continuous monitoring of the situation is ongoing to ensure the safety of residents and the restoration of order.
“However, monitoring continues while the clearance operation is intensified,” he said, without stating whether or not there were casualties.
Footage and pictures obtained by Peoples Gazette on Monday showed the remnants of the destroyed bridge with movement between the affected communities, leaving villagers and commuters stranded.
Niger has witnessed a surge in terror attacks and violence in recent months.
In January, no less than 30 people were killed when terrorists attacked a village market in Kebe district, at Borgu LGA
The marauders had stormed the Kasuwan Daji market in Demo village, setting it ablaze. They also looted shops and abducted an unspecified number of residents.
The violent attacks by suspected militants on communities and markets in Niger have continued to heighten fear among local residents.
