Veteran British model Daphne Selfe, recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest professional model, has died at the age of 97.

Her family announced on her Instagram page on Monday that Ms Selfe passed away on March 21.

Sharing a tribute, the family said, “She rose peacefully and purposely towards the light, as only the sensational model in her knew how, in the sunshine of a beautiful spring equinox afternoon.”

Ms Selfe’s family said she remained passionate about her work, noting that her final working day was in June 2025, when she attended a Vogue luncheon at Royal Ascot Ladies’ Day.

“What a way to bow out: fashion, people, and horses… her main loves. She will continue to inspire, always and forever,” the family added.

Born on July 1, 1928, Ms Selfe began modelling in the 1950s.

Known for her beautiful white hair, she trained as a model at the Gaby Young Agency and worked as a house model for department stores, appearing in commercials for brands like Gin and campaigns for major brands like Vogue.

Ms Selfe continued modeling and often spoke about embracing natural ageing, refusing to dye her hair or undergo plastic surgery, often crediting her good looks to cream, water, and a healthy diet.

In 2019, she received the British Empire Medal from Queen Elizabeth II for her services, especially to older women in fashion.

She is survived by her children, Mark, Claire, and Rose, as well as her grandchildren, Jack, Alec, Grace, and Robin.
