The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has welcomed the defection of former Kano State Governor and NNPP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, to the party.

The party’s national publicity secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, in a statement on Monday in Abuja, described Mr Kwankwaso as a “game-changer” whose move signalled a growing coalition for change ahead of future elections.

Mr Abdullahi noted that Mr Kwankwaso’s defection was already reflected in the surge in registrations on the party’s online platform within 24 hours.

He said the former governor’s joining the party was a reflection of a growing recognition that Nigeria needed a new direction.

The ADC spokesperson added that the time had come for leaders and citizens alike to come together and support a credible alternative that puts the people first.

“Sen. Kwankwaso’s decision speaks to what many Nigerians already feel, that the country needs leadership that understands the challenges people face every day.

“His experience in governance, his strong grassroots connection and his ability to bring people together make him a valuable part of this collective effort to rebuild Nigeria.

“As part of this move, he has also encouraged members of his political movement and supporters across the country to join ADC to add strength to this growing coalition for change,” he added.

The statement said Mr Kwankwaso’s defection was witnessed by key leaders of the party, including the national chairman, Senator David Mark, the national secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, and members of the National Working Committee (NWC).

It also said that some leading presidential aspirants, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi, were in attendance.

Mr Abdullahi noted that their presence reflected a party that was united, focused, and steadily building momentum.

According to him, in the last 24 hours, the party’s online registration platform has seen a significant surge in new members.

“This is a clear sign that more Nigerians are beginning to align with a different path forward.

“ADC is not just a political party. It is a shared commitment to building a country where people can live with dignity, find opportunity and trust that the system will work for them,” he added.
