Tinubu hosts Chadian president, strengthens bilateral ties

The visit is seen as part of broader efforts to reinforce multilateral cooperation within the Lake Chad Basin.

• April 2, 2026

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday hosted President Idriss Déby of Chad at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The brief high-level meeting underscores ongoing efforts by both countries to strengthen bilateral relations and deepen cooperation on regional security, trade, and economic development.

Mr Tinubu received the Chadian leader in a closed-door session, where both leaders discussed issues of mutual interest and regional collaboration.

The meeting took place shortly before Mr Tinubu’s planned trip to Jos to commiserate with victims of recent attacks in Plateau State.

Nigeria and Chad, key stakeholders in the Lake Chad Basin, have continued to collaborate in addressing shared security challenges.

Both countries are actively involved in tackling insurgency and cross-border threats affecting the region.

Mr Déby’s visit underscores the enduring relationship between both countries and their mutual interest in deepening strategic cooperation.

The visit is also seen as part of broader efforts to reinforce multilateral cooperation within the Lake Chad Basin.
