An American F-15E fighter plane on Operation Epic Fury in the Middle East has been shot down over Iran, prompting a U.S. military emergency search and rescue operation on Friday.

According to a Reuters report citing an anonymous government official, the fate of the crew remains unclear.

Videos circulating on social media showed several military aircraft, including helicopters, fighter jets and refuelling planes flying very low over the Iranian sky.

In a counter-operation, Iran’s Fars news agency reported that Iranian military forces have also been deployed to capture the crew members of the jet before American military operatives can get to them.

“Military forces have launched a search operation to find the American fighter pilot who was hit earlier today,” the AFP quoted an Iranian television reporter on the official local channel as saying.
