Former assembly speaker Iya Abbas declares interest in Adamawa governorship

Senator Iya Abbas, representing the Adamawa Central senatorial district, has formally declared interest in contesting the 2027 governorship election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Mr Abbas, who stated this on Friday in Yola, said that he was in a better position to succeed Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, who was already serving his second term.
He said he knew Adamawa well as a two-time member of the state assembly, former speaker and now in the Senate.
“I am part of the history; we don’t want it to stop; we want to continue on that trajectory when our governor leaves so that Adamawa will continue to move forward.
“Secondly, everyone knows that there is peace in Adamawa; the governor has brought peace, and everybody is happy with this, and we need to sustain it.
“Nobody knows how to maintain it more than I do; that is why I am offering myself to the people of the state,” he said.
Mr Abbas said if voted to power, he would lead and impact the people positively in areas of security, agriculture, health, education and other sectors.
“I will tackle some of the security challenges to enable people to go to their farms and provide farm implements and fertiliser at subsidised rates and on time for bumper harvests,” he said.
While appreciating Mr Fintri for giving the people of the state a sense of belonging, the aspirant pledged to sustain it if elected.
Mr Abbas, who was elected into the Senate in 2023, said he has sponsored a lot of bills on education, health technology, among others, to better the lot of his people.
