Ghanaian player Frimpong killed in attack on Berekum Chelsea team bus

Ghanaian footballer Dominic Frimpong has died after the bus carrying Berekum Chelsea players was attacked by armed robbers while on their road back from a Ghana Premier League game against Samartex on Sunday.
Reports noted that the bus with 30 players and officials onboard was returning from Samreboi to Berekum when they came under heavy gunfire around 10:30 p.m. from six masked men, resulting in Frimpong suffering gunshot wounds.
The Ghana Police Service (GPS) confirmed the incident on Monday, stating Frimpong was rushed to a hospital but later passed away while receiving treatment.
“During the attack, Dominic Frimpong, a footballer, sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but unfortunately passed away while receiving treatment.
“Another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, 52 was also robbed of GHS 4,500.00. Two spent BB cartridges were retrieved from the scene to assist investigations,” the police said.
The GPS vowed the suspects would be arrested soon, noting that its Ashanti Regional Police branch has launched a manhunt. It also stated additional experts have been deployed to the crime scene.
“The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched a manhunt for armed robbers who attacked passengers along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso (KDS) road in the Nyinahin District on Sunday, 12 April 2026 at about 10:30 pm.
“The Regional Police Command has deployed additional personnel and Crime Scene experts to the area and is currently on a manhunt for the suspects. The Police assure the public that the perpetrators will be arrested within the shortest possible time,” the GPS added.
In a statement, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) expressed shock over the incident, while also condoling with family members, club and teammates of the deceased.
“The GFA extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, his teammates, technical staff, management, and all at Berekum Chelsea during this extremely difficult time.
“This tragic incident is not only a huge loss to Berekum Chelsea but also to Ghana football as a whole. Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league,” the GFA said.
