A magistrates’ court in Jos on Tuesday sentenced 38-year-old businessman Hussaini Aliyu to one year in the Nigeria Correctional Service in Plateau for borrowing money and absconding.

The convict pleaded guilty to the charge.

The magistrate, Irene Pati, sentenced the convict to one year’s imprisonment and gave him the option of a N50,000 fine.

She also ordered him to pay a compensation of N500,000 or, in default, spend an additional seven months in prison.

While reviewing the facts, the prosecutor, Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the complainant, Jinaidu Zaki, reported the case on March 16 at the Nassarawa Gwong Police Station.

Mr Gokwat said the convict met the complainant and borrowed N500,000 to complete his fuel supply as a fuel station manager. After the money was transferred to him, he absconded until he was arrested.
