2027: Opposition parties seek electoral act amendment

Opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), on Saturday urged the National Assembly to urgently amend the 2026 Electoral Act.
In a communique issued at the end of the national summit of all opposition political party leaders, held in Ibadan, Oyo State, the parties called for the removal of provisions that could undermine the credibility of the 2027 general elections.
“The National Assembly should immediately review the Electoral Act, 2026, to remove all sections that threaten the sanctity and integrity of the elections and run counter to constitutional provisions,” the factional national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tanimu Turaki, said.
They also vowed to resist the ploy to impose a one-party system on Nigeria.
“We shall resist all machinations by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to foist a one-party state on Nigeria and fight for the survival of multi-party democracy in our country,” Mr Turaki said.
The opposition also demanded that “all leading politicians that are being detained or harassed on bailable offences be released with immediate effect and allowed to exercise their fundamental rights of participation and inclusivity as Nigerians.”
In addition, the opposition parties called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to extend the deadline for primaries till the end of July 2026, describing the current May 30 deadline as an obstacle “deliberately engineered to impose conditions and deadlines on the opposition parties”.
