Mali defence minister Sadio Camara killed in terrorist attack

Mali’s Defence Minister, General Sadio Camara, has been killed in a series of terrorist attacks targeting military sites across the country.
Mr Camara, along with one of his wives and two grandchildren, was killed in a car bomb attack on his residence in Kati on Saturday.
An arrowhead among coup plotters who seized power after back-to-back coups in 2020 and 2021, Mr Camara is a key figure in Asimi Goita’s military regime.
On Saturday, suspected Al-Qaeda-linked militants and Tuareg rebels launched attacks across Mali, causing a temporary shutdown of the country’s main airport as explosions rocked different locations in the country.
In a statement on Saturday, the Malian military said “fighting is ongoing”, adding “our defence and security forces are currently engaged in repelling the attackers.”
Plagued by insurgency, Mali’s military seized power after coups in 2020 and 2021, dissolving political parties.
