Cole Tomas Allen, the gunman who stormed the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night, shooting and disrupting the event, has been charged with attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump.

Appearing before the court on Monday, Mr Allen was hit with three charges, including attempting to assassinate Mr Trump, a charge that could attract a life imprisonment penalty.

The second charge borders on transportation of a firearm interstate to commit a felony. Mr Allen could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison for this charge.

The third charge against Mr Allen is discharge of a firearm in a crime of violence. He could face up to 10 years in federal prison if found guilty.

Armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives, Mr Allen fired at a federal official during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night, disrupting the event.

Though he could not access the ballroom where Mr Trump and Vice President JD Vance were seated, the duo were swiftly escorted out of the venue by Secret Service agents.
