An officer of the Delta State police command has been arrested for killing a handcuffed suspect on the street.

The incident comes nearly six years after the #EndSARS protests against police brutality, extrajudicial killings and extortion.

A viral video that emerged on social media on Tuesday shows a man with his hands cuffed behind his back pleading for mercy before a police officer shot him. A police bus seen at the scene bears the inscription “Nigerian Police Force, Effurun Area Command, Delta State.”

Bright Edafe, the police spokesperson in Delta State, did not pick up calls when contacted for comment on the incident.

However, reacting to a video condemning the extrajudicial killing of the man in cuffs, Mr Edafe said the perpetrator has been arrested, and posted a photo of a police officer with his face covered.

“The officer, ASP Usman Nuhu, has been arrested and transferred to force headquarters to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee currently in session for immediate disciplinary sanction and prosecution,” Mr Edafe said.

Anthony Placid, spokesperson for the Nigerian Police Force, in a statement on Tuesday, said, “The Nigeria Police Force condemns the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, which occurred on 26th April 2026 in Effurun, Delta State.”

Mr Placid added that “preliminary reports indicate that operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command responded to credible information from Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway regarding a suspect apprehended by members of a transport union while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.

“While efforts were being made to take the suspect into lawful custody, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, discharged his firearm in clear violation of extant regulations, resulting in the death of the suspect.”

Mr Placid said the police have directed the immediate transfer of the officer and his team to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where he would face a committee for summary disciplinary measures and prosecution.
