Players to get yellow card amnesty at 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage
FIFA is expected to introduce a second amnesty stage that wipes out all accumulated yellow cards twice at the 2026 World Cup.
According to The Athletic, yellow card records would reset at the end of the World Cup group stages and after the quarter-finals to reduce the chance of players missing knockout matches.
The Athletic also reported that the proposal was part of FIFA’s discussions and due to be approved at the FIFA Council meeting in Vancouver on Tuesday.
At previous World Cup tournaments, yellows were only cleared after the quarterfinals, but with the competition expanded from 32 to 48 teams, teams now have to play five matches instead of four to reach the quarter-finals.
Any two bookings in those games would lead to a suspension, prompting FIFA to review the rules as it fears many players risk a ban by playing six fixtures through to the last eight, and potentially missing a semi-final.
Meanwhile, the threshold for suspension will remain two bookings.
