A Kaduna magistrates’ court on Wednesday ordered that a labourer, Jamilu Ado, be flogged for stealing clothes worth N50,000.

The magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, gave the order after the convict pleaded guilty to a two-count charge bordering on the offence.

The court held that the punishment would have been severe if the convict had not pleaded guilty to save the court time and avoid a protracted prosecution.

The prosecutor, Chidi Leo, told the court that a complainant, Musa Abubakar of Ungwan Sarki, Kaduna, had reported the matter to Gabasawa Police Station on April 20.

According to him, the complainant washed his clothes and spread them in his compound before going to work, but the convict criminally trespassed into the compound and stole five of his clothes worth N75,000.

He told the court that the convict, however, ran out of luck when a neighbour unexpectedly returned to the compound, raised the alarm, and got him caught and handed over to the police.

The prosecutor added that the convict confessed to the crime.
