A 19-year-old scavenger, Samson Mohammed, was on Thursday arraigned in a Life Camp Magistrates’ Court for allegedly inflicting injury on a guard.

The police charged Mohammed, who lives in Karino, Abuja, with criminal conspiracy, trespass, assault, and causing hurt.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge .

The Prosecution Counsel, Charity Nwachukwu, told the court that the complainants, Mohammed Kabiru of Ereke Area Karimo and his guard, Joshua Ayuba of Dape village, Abuja reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station on April 22.

Ms Nwachukwu said that the defendant and three others, at large, conspired and trespassed into the complainant’s compound.

She said that the complainant’s guard tried to prevent the defendant from stealing his employer’s property.

She told the court that the defendant dishonestly attacked Ayuba with a cutlass, inflicting a deep cut on his left hand.

She informed the court that the defendant fled from the scene as Ayuba called out for help which attracted the attention of the neighbours and a passer-by.

Ms Nwachukwu told the court that the defendant was later caught and handed over to the police for proper investigation.

She said that during police investigation and interrogation, the defendant admitted to the crime.

She noted that the offences, contravened section 97, 348, 265, and 246 of the panel code.

The Magistrate, Best Ojukwu, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum N200,000 with a one surety in like sum.

She ordered that the surety must reside within the court jurisdiction and provide reliable means of identification.

Ms Ojukwu adjourned the matter until June 16 for hearing.
