The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has taunted presidential aspirant Peter Obi, labelling him “Nigeria’s inconsolable political drifter,” following his defection from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The APC, in a statement on Sunday by its spokesperson, Felix Morka, said Mr Obi was “roaming” in search of a free presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 election.

It also alleged that the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate was unwilling to build a political party.

“Peter Obi, a political rolling stone that gathers no moss… roaming again in search of a free, uncontested, unchallenged presidential ticket… never willing to remain to build any party,” it said.

The ruling party added that the former Anambra State governor “fantasises to be president on a ticket delivered only a platter of gold (sic),” recalling his defection from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party, and the ADC.

There are political moves between Mr Peter and a former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to run on joint ticket on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) against Mr Tinubu in the 2027 poll. 

Earlier Sunday, Mr Obi announced his decision to leave the ADC, citing “endless court cases, internal battles, suspicion, and division.”

The politician also stated that politicians who “created unnecessary crises and hostility” within the Labour Party “now appear to be finding their way into the ADC.”

Mr Obi on December 30 officially defected from the LP to the coalition-backed ADC and declared his readiness to work with like-minded Nigerians to resist electoral malpractice in the 2027 general elections.

In the run-up to the 2023 general elections, Mr Obi garnered widespread popularity candidate, pulling crowds at rallies following his defection frthe PDP for the LP.

Since his defeat by President Bola Tinubu, he has remained in the spotlight.
