A former Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Peter Ameh, has resigned from the Labour Party, citing overriding national interest.

Mr Ameh announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the Labour Party chairman in Ogugu Ward 1, Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi, in Abuja on Wednesday.

Describing the decision as difficult, he said it was taken after careful reflection.

He stated, “This choice is made in the overriding interest of our nation’s progress and the continued stability of our democracy.

“I wish to express my profound gratitude to you and all members of the Labour Party in Olamaboro and Nigeria at large for the support, trust and cooperation I received during my time in the party.

“My association with the Labour Party was rooted in my belief in its socio-democratic ideals. It was further strengthened by the enduring friendship and solidarity of my late brother, the former National Chairman of the party, Abdulkadir Abdulsalam.”

Mr Ameh served as national chairman of the Progressive Peoples Alliance and also the party’s presidential candidate in 2019.

The former Labour Party chieftain, who said that his faith in the country’s prospect of a multi-party democratic system remained unflinching, pledged to continue to ensure its sustainability and survival.

“My decision is not borne out of anger or personal interest but from my conviction that political institutions must be built on trust, respect for agreements, and institutional integrity and that our words, both in private and public, must reflect our actions and decisions.

“As I step into a new phase, I thank the leadership and members of the party for the opportunity to pursue our shared aspiration of building a better and more prosperous Nigeria.

“I sincerely appreciate all party members, supporters and associates who have shown goodwill and commitment over the years. I also wish the National Working Committee and members of the Labour Party nationwide success in their future endeavours and in their continued efforts toward national development,” he said.
