Goodluck Jonathan to consider contesting in 2027 presidential election

Former President Goodluck Jonathan says he will consult widely amid calls by his supporters for him to run for president in 2027.
Mr Jonathan served as president from 2009 to 2015.
On Thursday, while speaking to supporters who marched to his office to call on him to contest the presidential election, Mr Jonathan said, “The presidential race is not a computer game, but I heard you, and I will consult widely.”
He added that only patriotic citizens build their nations, while unpatriotic citizens will destroy their nation and take the money to foreign countries to enjoy their lives.
The former president noted that “the key thing is peace in this country, and you will continue to advocate for that, and you continue to advocate for peaceful and credible elections in the country, because if we don’t have peaceful and credible elections, most good citizens will not want to bother getting involved in politics”.
This was not the first time that supporters of the former president had held a rally, urging him to run for office.
In April, some youths thronged Mr Jonathan’s office near the Farmers’ Market in Maitama, Abuja, in protest, urging him to contest for the presidency.
