Mother arraigned over alleged mistreatment of adopted children in Anambra

The magistrate adjourned the case until August 19 for report of compliance.

A mother, 50-year-old Nonye Ezenwanne, who allegedly whipped her adopted children, ages six and four, with an electric cable, on Thursday was arraigned at the Anambra Children, Sexual and Gender-based Violence Offences Court in Awka

The defendant is facing a charge of wilfully inflicting physical injury on minors, to which she pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Chinyere Okechukwu, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on April 28, at Block 8, MTI Housing Estate, Fegge in Onitsha.

ā€œThat you, Nonye Eucharia Ezenwanne, wilfully inflicted physical injury on your adopted children, Echefune Ezenwanne, six, and Chikaima Ezenwanne, four, with wire; and you thereby committed an offence,ā€ the prosecutor said.

Mr Okechukwu said that the offence  contravened Section 4(1) of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibitions and Protections) Laws of Anambra State of Nigeria 2017.

The Chief Magistrate, U.E. Onochie, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with a surety in like sum.

Ms Onochie adjourned the case until August 19, for report of compliance.
