Uganda’s Museveni to be sworn in for seventh term on Tuesday

President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda is set to be officially sworn in on Tuesday for a seventh term as the country’s leader.
In a memo dated May 8, 2026, Alan Kasujja, the director of the Uganda Media Centre, said Mr Museveni would retain office for another five-year term.
“On Tuesday, 12th May 2026, President-Elect His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni will be officially sworn in for the 2026-2031 term,” the memo reads.
“Accordingly, the Minister of Public Service has declared the day a holiday for the general public,” it added.
Mr Museveni, who won the January election, polled 71.65 per cent of the total votes, defeating his main challenger and opposition leader, Bobi Wine, who secured 24.72 per cent.
The 81-year-old has been in power for four decades. Since assuming office in 1986, he has overseen constitutional amendments removing presidential age and term limits, allowing him to extend his rule.
