The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a suspected kidnapper, Mohammed Sanusi, and recovered items linked to the crime during an operation at the Otefon Village Forest.

Ayanlade Olayinka, the command’s spokesperson, said in a statement on Thursday that the suspect was arrested on May 13, 2026, following credible intelligence received by security operatives.

“On Wednesday, 13th May 2026, at about 0100HRS, credible intelligence was received through operatives of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), Oyo, that a gang of suspected kidnappers had assembled at Otefon Village Forest to collect ransom from relatives of a kidnapped victim,” he said.

Mr Olayinka stated that upon receiving the report, operatives attached to the anti-kidnapping squad (AKS) in the Oyo/Iseyin axis, in collaboration with members of the vigilante group, were immediately deployed to the area to rescue the victim.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the gang, consisting of about six armed men, had on 9th May 2026 invaded the residence of one Alhaji Bagudu ‘M’ of Ilowa Village, Atiba Local Government Area, Oyo State, abducted him and subsequently took him into the Otefon Forest,” he said

According to him, the abductors demanded a ransom of N10 million for the victim’s release.

Mr Olayinka added that after confirming the victim had regained his freedom unharmed, operatives moved to apprehend the suspects and prevent further threats to lives and property.

He said, “Security operatives successfully identified the exact location where the suspected kidnappers had assembled and strategically laid an ambush for the criminals.

“Upon the arrival of the individual conveying the alleged ransom and subsequent confirmation of the victim’s safe release, operatives from the police and other collaborating security outfits approached the scene.”

He explained that the suspects opened fire on sighting the advancing security team, leading to a gun duel.

In the ensuing exchange, the suspects fled into the adjoining forest with varying degrees of suspected gunshot injuries, while one suspect, identified as Mohammed Sanni, was apprehended,” he said.

The police spokesperson disclosed that a Haojue motorcycle with registration number TUT 824 TY was recovered from the scene.

Items recovered also include a small mobile phone, a pair of slippers and a cap, all of which are currently undergoing forensic examination.

“The suspect is currently in custody and has made useful confessional statements regarding his role and involvement within the criminal syndicate. Meanwhile, concerted efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing members of the gang and bring them to justice,” he stated.

Mr Olayinka further urged the public to report any individual seen with suspicious bullet wounds or injuries to the police for necessary action.
