The Kano State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children and Persons with Special Needs, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi-Sani, has urged parents and families to stop concealing cases of gender-based violence.

According to her, silence only emboldens perpetrators and denies victims access to justice.

Mrs Abdullahi-Sani made the call on Sunday during the Radio France Internationale (RFI) programmes, Rayuwa Series and Grand Kano Hausa Festival 2026.

She said that reporting such cases to the relevant authorities would help curb the growing menace and ensure that survivors received the support, protection and justice they deserved.

According to her, many cases of abuse and violence remain unreported because families fear stigma and public scrutiny, a situation she describes as dangerous to victims and society.

“Silence only empowers offenders to continue harming innocent people, while survivors are left without the care and protection they need,” she said.

The commissioner said the ministry remained committed to tackling abuse, violence, neglect and exploitation affecting women, children and vulnerable persons across the state.

She added that the ministry would continue to protect the rights and dignity of vulnerable groups through intervention programmes, advocacy and collaboration with stakeholders.

Mrs Abdullahi-Sani also called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, community members, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to support government efforts to combat GBV and other harmful practices.

She commended Radio France Internationale Hausa Service for providing a platform that promotes public awareness, social development and community engagement through the Rayuwa series.

The commissioner described the initiative as impactful and beneficial to society.

She was also presented with an award of excellence in recognition of her contributions to the welfare of women, children and persons with special needs.
