The Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has postponed its governorship primary election earlier scheduled for Thursday (today) until Friday, May 22, April, 2026.

The state party Publicity Secretary, Abdulwaheed Babatunde, made the disclosure in a statement in Ilorin, the state capital, on Thursday.

“This is to inform all members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) across Kwara State that the Governorship Primary Election earlier scheduled for today, Thursday, 21st May 2026, has been rescheduled to Friday, 22nd May 2026,” the statement read.

The ruling APC urged aspirants and members to take note of the new date and make the necessary adjustments.

It also appealed for understanding and cooperation from stakeholders,  preparations continue for the rescheduled exercise. 

The postponement came days after Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq endorsed a popular businessman, philanthropist and politician, Yahaya Seriki, as his preferred successor for the state governorship election. 

Mr Abdulrazaq, who described Mr Seriki as young, pro-people, astute, and broad-minded, stated that the politician had been a great political mobiliser with profound investments and extensive goodwill among Kwara people.

Following the governor’s endorsement, several governorship aspirants, including Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe, Salako Muyideen Oluwatoyin, Captain Ahmad Mahmoud, Aisha Ahman Patigi, Sulaiman Abubakar, Yakubu Danladi, Wale Sulyman and Dele Belgore, had withdrawn from the primary election and declared support for Mr Seriki.

The aspirants were said to have announced their decision after an extensive closed-door meeting with Mr Abdulrazaq’s anointed aspirant on Wednesday in Ilorin.

Mr Seriki, who spoke after the meeting, thanked the aspirants for their support, urging stakeholders and supporters to unite to consolidate on Mr Abdulrazaq’s achievements. 

“This is beyond personal ambition. It is about the future of Kwara State and the need to sustain the progress our people are already witnessing.

“We must approach this process with unity, understanding, and a shared commitment to the development of our state. I deeply appreciate my brothers and sisters who have chosen the path of collaboration and party cohesion,” Mr Seriki stated.
