The Kano lawmaker representing Gwale constituency, Abdulmajid Fata, has dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress for the Nigeria Democratic Congress after losing his re-election bid.

Mr Fata, a member of the Kano State House of Assembly, was received on Thursday in Abuja by former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

In a statement on Thursday, Mr Kwankwaso’s media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, confirmed the lawmaker’s defection to the NDC.

“Today (Thursday, May 21, 2026), His Excellency, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, PhD, FNSE, welcomed Hon. Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mai Rigar Fata, member representing Gwale Constituency in the Kano State House of Assembly, following his defection from the APC to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) at his residence in Maitama, Abuja,” he said.

Mr Hassan added that Kabiru Sani Auwal Obi, former vice-chairman of Gwale LGA, and Mahadi Isa Umar also joined the NDC.

Mr Fata ran for election in 2023 on the platform of the New Nigeria People’s Party and later defected to the APC.
