Physical fitness crucial to troops fighting bandits, terrorists: Defence Chief

Defence chief Olufemi Oluyede has restated the critical role of physical fitness in enhancing combat readiness and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Mr Oluyede stated this at the Second Quarter 2026 Armed Forces Route March on Friday in Abuja. He urged personnel to sustain fitness standards in line with the demands of modern military operations, describing the route march as a vital exercise that promotes discipline, teamwork and endurance among troops.
The defence chief said the exercise was not just a ceremonial activity but a key component of military preparedness, especially as troops continue to operate in complex and dynamic security environments across the country.
Mr Oluyede commended commanders and heads of departments for mobilising officers and men for the exercise, noting that such commitment was essential to strengthening the operational efficiency of the armed forces.
He also lauded the Director of Sports and his team for the successful organisation of the event.
Mr Oluyede urged troops to remain focused on their constitutional mandate of safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria, while consistently meeting the Armed Forces’ fitness standards.
According to him, the route march also serves as a platform to foster unity, professionalism and inter-service cooperation among personnel.
The defence chief expressed confidence in the ability of the Armed Forces to build on current efforts and deliver improved results in ongoing operations.
