2027: Shun do-or-die politics, cleric advises politicians

A cleric, Biola Ezekiel of Divine Grace Church, Ilorin, has advised politicians to shun do-or-die politics and embrace fair play ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mr Ezekiel gave the advice during an interview on Saturday in Ilorin.
He said politicians must learn to accept defeat in good faith and avoid actions capable of causing unrest over election outcomes.
The cleric regretted that many politicians found it difficult to accept defeat and often resorted to violence.
He said, “As the country prepares for the 2027 general elections, politicians must embrace fair play and shun do-or-die politics. Imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship and learn to accept defeat in good faith rather than resorting to violence.
“After elections, politicians should learn to work together with their opponents for the progress of the country.”
The cleric also advised youths not to allow themselves to be used as agents of violence during elections.
He urged them to exercise their political rights responsibly and avoid being used as political thugs by politicians.
General elections are due in the country in 2027, with the electoral body setting January 16 for presidential and National Assembly elections.
According to the schedule, governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections will follow on February 6.
Ahead of the elections, aspirants, through primaries, are jostling to fly their party flags in different positions, with winners and losers emerging.
Before the general elections, off-cycle governorship elections are due in Ekiti and Osun states in June and August 2026.
